100+ companies’ team leads, C-Level executives, software developers and external consultants took part in our survey to compile a list of the 4 most frequently-used Agile project management tools in 2019:
Atlassian (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket) - 18.8%
Trello - 10%
Asana - 4.7%
Slack - 2.8%
Other tools - 26.4%
Don’t use any or are in search - 37.7%
71% of companies have started implementing Agile during the last 5 years, which, in turn, lead to the appearance of various agile project management tools used for monitoring the project progress and organizing team workflow.
Which agile project management tool should you choose? This is what our respondents said, according to our research:
1. Jira - The Most Frequently-chosen Atlassian Tool
Atlassian is a project management software that helps your team stay on the same page when managing the project from the start. It includes Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket etc.
Pros:
- Easy idea sharing
- Project management alerts
- Easy registration and organization of project data
- An easy way to create a large number of documents
Brmodelo For Mac Os
18.86% of our respondents chose Atlassian software, while 75% consider Jira as one of the best agile project management tools among all the Atlassian tools.
Nearly 90% of the companies using Jira are large (500+employees) and middle-sized (51 - 200) companies. The main reason Jira occupies a leading position is because it fits the majority of business needs and is easy to use. Alerts are organized in a memory-friendly way, which makes it simpler to keep in mind the tasks by priority and consequently reach better productivity results. Additionally, the tool still helps you with bug and issue tracking.
By analyzing user’s feedback from Capterra, we have distinguished the most loved features:
- Clear and open interface
- Versatile functionalities
- Better task prioritization
- Usage simplicity
- Perfect integration with other apps (especially other Atlassian products)
- More suitable for large teams
Jira is a Great Project Management Tool For Software Development, Task Estimations And Agile Implementation.

2. Trello
Nearly 10% of those surveyed chose Trello as an agile project management tool: 40% of the surveyed companies are small (11 - 50 employees) and 30% - are micro companies, which leads us to the conclusion that Trello is more suitable for small businesses. It uses boards with sticky labels to organize tasks, so you can easily monitor projects and visually see what stage your project is currently undergoing. Create a board for each team or team member and divide the tasks into categories according to the level of completion. Trello is perfect to use within the Kanban methodology.
Useful features according to Capterra.com:
- Simple Kanban-style layout
- Whether you're working with Windows, Mac, Android, iOS etc, you can easily keep track of your work and progress.
- Easy integration with external software and services, like Github, slack, Google Calendar, Google Drive
- Security access
- An easy way to assign tasks and add new members, no complicated registration needed
- Better for small teams
Trello is More Than a Project Management Tool. It Resembles Your Digital Sprint Board.
3. Asana
Asana shared third place with a total score of 4.7%. According to our research, 60% of the surveyed are micro companies with 2 - 10 total number of employees, which leads to the conclusion that Asana works well mainly for small businesses and teams.
Among the top reasons for choosing Asana is again its seamless integration with other Atlassian tools, it is free, and can work perfectly for startups. Asana helps allocate work between team members and facilitate an easy interaction. However, there were also some drawbacks. Those surveyed concluded that Asana is not good enough to meet all of the companies’ needs, most likely due to the lack of options to indicate tasks as 'complete' and the inability to assign multiple people to the same task.
Useful features according to Capterra.com:
- Calendar synchronization
- User-friendly interface
- The ability to create tasks, project templates, color-coded calendars, and visual project plans
- Great email integration
- Clever personal tasks view when each task can be viewed and commented on by the entire team, ensuring tasks are not missed or forgotten
Asana is Highly Customizable, Which Makes it an Excellent Project Management Tool For Software, Website, App, Business Dev, and Creative Applications (Marketing, Copywriting, Graphic Design, etc).

4. Slack
Slack reached only 2.80% of users according to our research. The biggest advantage of implementing Slack for team communication is how well it integrates with other applications. On the other hand, the free Slack plan allows only a history of 10k messages, which are archived after the limit has expired and can be accessed only upon the purchase of the Pro Plan.
Useful Features According to Capterra:
- Comfortable notification settings
- Integration with Google Drive and other services
- Easy content search
- Easy-shareable project resources, files.
- Direct/private chats for more sensitive information
- Integration with other project management tools, Google Docs, Spotify, Canto DAM
Other Team and Project Management Tools
26.42% of the surveyed mentioned other or additional tools, which we combined into one category. Those belonging here include Visual Studio, Confluence, Excel sheet, Redmine, Bitbucket, Bamboo, TFS (Team Foundation Server), SharePoint, Gitlab, Rally, Brmodelo, Projektron BCS, OpenProject, FunRetro etc. 46.43% of the surveyed are large companies ( 501+), which leads to the conclusion that large companies need more than one tool to successfully manage their teams.
The lion’s share of the surveyed - 37.74% - reported that currently they do not use or are in search of tools to manage their projects. Generally, (40%) these are micro companies with the average number of employees ranging from 2-10.
What Criteria Should You Use When Choosing an Agile Project Management Tool?
Despite the fact that the majority of agile project management tools offer a more or less similar set of features, no two tools are identical. The following steps will help you pick the tool to best organize your team members and manage your project.
Step 1. Describe your needs
You need to understand whether a tool should include task management or scheduling features, real-time notifications or graphic reports? Should it be secure at least? Functionality is important, but if your data isn’t safe, then the integrity of your project isn’t either.
If you experience challenges with planning, scheduling, or setting deadlines, you need project management software that will help you assign tasks and allocate resources. If the problem is with task tracking, look for a tool that allows you to set project tracking features, updates, and reports.
Step 2. Define the users
Who will use the tool? What is the size of the team? This information matters since smaller teams usually need a simpler solution in comparison to larger ones. Moreover, a majority of the tools can cope only with a small number of users, while larger teams need the Pro Plans.
Step 3. Try different alternatives
As soon as you seem to find the project management software you need, don’t rush to implement it. Research the alternatives. The more you research, the higher the chances are that you choose the right one. Get in touch with different providers for demo versions, which will visually show you how the tool works, and if it’s really what you were searching for.
Step 4. Evaluate costs
This step should be taken simultaneously with the process of researching and evaluating the functionality of a tool. Define whether the features you get deserve the price you will be paying.
Step 5. The usage
The fact that you have chosen, tested, and successfully acquired a certain tool doesn’t mean your job is done. Agile project management tools aren’t only for project managers. Though you may think there’s no need for it, spend some time to plan in detail how you and your team are going to implement the tool.
